Rip Curl Girl
a company as dedicated to riding as this, was bound to extend its range to encompass women’s clothing and support for girl’s and women’s events as it expanded. Rip Curl was first started in 1969, focussing on building boards in Australia. The boards were made with surfers in mind, and the original owners Doug Warbick and Brian Singer were dedicated to shaping boards that real surfers wanted- an ethos that still serves the Rip Curl brand to this day. Rip Curl refers to the style of surfing popular in Austrlia in the early 1970’s , made possible by the emergence of shorter boards that enabled surfer to get in close to the ‘curl’ of the wave and ride it in a new and powerful way. By 1970 Rip Curl had branched into wet suits and clothing soon followed. Global expansion was on the horizon, but Rip Curl has managed to stay close to it’s roots by ensuring that those companies allowed to make the clothes and wet suits throughout the world under the Rip Curl name were true believers in the brand and it’s passion for the true core of riding waves: The Search. Rip Curl now manufactures boards, hardware and clothes for women and girl’s always staying close to it’s roots of rider influenced, inspired and tested products.
Team & Events
Since it’s beginning, Rip Curl has been a company that supports riders and events. In 1973 Rip Curl led the Australian market in wet suit manufacturing, and in this same year the company sponsored the first pro-surfing content in Australia at Bells Beach. Since the first Rip Curl Pro, the company has built up an impressive calendar of events and a stable of sponsored female riders from Pro’s on the WCT tour (including famous surfing names like Jacqueline Silva, Jessi Miley-Dyer, Stephanie Gilmore and Bethany Hamilton) to up and coming riders, snowboards, free skiers, skateboarders and wakeboarders.
